Bryan was an undergraduate at University of Houston majoring in Biology. Bryan investigated the morphometric patterns of evolution in snappers and sculpins. Bryan pioneered the culture and use of pistol shrimp (Alpheidae) as a model system for the study of neural regulation of development and size regulation.
